The Rally for Medical Research began with a reception on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, Sept. 16, featuring remarks from NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins and Senators Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), and Patty Murray (D-Wash.). The Senators all emphasized the impact of NIH funding on the health and economy of the United States, and Dr. Collins specifically called out the fact that without increased investment in the NIH today, many promising treatments could be left on the table by saying, "…Cures can't wait…biomedical research can't wait." These remarks were echoed by Mary Woolley of Research!America and patient advocates from the American Heart Association and the Alzheimer's Association of America, who presented their own perspectives about the impact of biomedical research. On the morning of the Rally Hill Day, participants attended a breakfast briefing, which highlighted the key messaging points and included an overview of the materials to help prepare attendees for their congressional meetings. Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.), chair of the House Labor-HHS Appropriations Subcommittee rallied advocates by underscoring the importance of a federal investment in the NIH, saying that "…the stars are aligned," for Congress to get behind increased NIH funding. Later, the Alliance for Aging Research unveiled a new video that powerfully reinforced the mission of the Rally.
